Lunch Lecture: The Story of Math

This quarter’s edition will be given by Gerardo Koelemeijer!

Many people view math as a collection of difficult, abstract concepts and formulas. However, math also has a different, more human side: it is an important element of culture and the development of mathematics can be seen as a success story. In this lecture we consider the story of mathematics. We will discuss, among other things, why and when mathematics originated, what the possible origin of the mathematical proof is, what the similarities are between law and mathematics, and whether or not babies already have some kind of numerical understanding. We will also briefly discuss how mathematics develops and discuss an open problem in number theory.
