In the last decade, data availability in football (soccer) has increased, facilitating a surge in data-driven research on football. Statistical and machine learning models in football analytics can be used for match analysis or for scouting purposes. However, the conservative world of football gives some unique challenges when using models at football clubs. We will discuss how to quantify the quality of football players while dealing with these challenges. Subsequently, we will cover how data describing historical performance can be used to provide additional information for instance about the future quality and value of football players.
