Dr. J. M. Aarts was appointed by Royal Decree of 6 August 1973 as Professor at the Department of General Science to teach pure and applied mathematics.

Johannes Michael Aarts was born in Sittard on April 17, 1938. After graduating from the gymnasium B in 1956, he studied viticulture and physics at the Municipal University of Amsterdam, where he passed cum laude in 1963 for the doctoral exam. In 1966 he graduated from the said university at the dissertation “Dimensions and deficiency in general topology”. His promoter was Prof. Dr. J. de Groot.

From 1960 to 1966 he joined the GU of Amsterdam, since 1963 as a scientific assistant. From 1966 to 1967, Dr. Aarts was employed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA). In 1967, his appointment as an ordinary lecturer in mathematics at the Delft University of Applied Sciences, which he accepted on 24 April 1969 with the public lesson “The dimension concept”. He completed guest professorships at Louisiana State University (1969), Wayne State University (1971) and University of Pittsburgh (1972), all in the United States. He was editor of the journal General Topology and its Applications.
